Hey there! Welcome to May’s crystal spotlight where we will be focusing on Pyrite. While it is not necessarily a crystal, it is a mineral whose metaphysical properties are vast, and largely beneficial. Pyrite is an iron sulfide mineral. It grows in many different forms including stalactites, striated cubes, and even as flat, radial disks called “suns” (pictured below). Pyrite is golden in color, has a metallic luster, and thus has been referred to as “fool’s gold.” Interestingly enough, this mineral symbolizes our ability to generate wealth by our own power.

This mineral relates us to our 2nd and 3rd Chakras, also known as the Sacral and Solar Plexus Chakras, respectively. Our Sacral Chakra is our creative source, our Solar Plexus is our center of self-esteem. Pyrite can tap into our abilities, potential, vitality and will. It can also boost our confidence, and encourage leadership.
Pyrite is known to be a protector, using the Earth’s energy and pulling it into the physical body and aura creating a defensive shield against negative energies. It also encourages boldness and assertiveness when we engage in protection of the earth, and our community. This stone is fiery, yet earthy, drawing in the properties of both of these elements. Its name, comes from the Greek pyr, or pyros, meaning “fire” for its ability to emit sparks when pieces are struck together or against hard surfaces.
How powerful is a stone that carries such fiery, grounded power? I feel it resonating with the energy of the sun, and I feel its golden rays of energy bringing me to life when I hold it. Gold is a color of wealth, prestige, and royalty but its warmth embodies a nurturing quality that makes me feel comfort. The regality of it brings me back to my childhood memories of repeated viewings of The Wizard Of Oz.
“If I were King of the Forest, not Queen, not Duke, not Prince.
My regal robes of the forest would be satin, not cotton, not chintz.
I’d command each thing, be it fish or fowl.
With a woof, and a woof, and a royal growl.
As I’d click my heel, all the tress would kneel,
And the mountains bow and the bulls kowtow.
And the sparrow would take wing – If I – If I were King.
Each rabbit would show respect to me. The chipmunks genuflect to me.
Though my tail would lash, I would show compash for every underling.
If I were King.” Sung by the Cowardly Lion, written by E.Y. Harburg.
Compash. The warm, glowing compassion of the color gold. The smooth, gentleness of a color so silken it shimmers with flecks of metallic catching the eye with its bling. A color suited for every one of us whose hearts beat steadily from all four chambers with a golden velvety liquid seeping into our veins. How rich are we that we don’t have to be miners for a heart of gold because we have one right under our chest plate? No need to keep on searching, yours is right at home, and there is no place like it.
